Just like Jimmy Rabbitte
I loved Skins. Count the ways I loved Skins. You might even come up with five.
But the last two episodes have been pants. Why, can’t quite put my finger on it. Is it believing its own hype – Harry Enfield as director ? Writer not quite as good as the one before…all I know is that it’s lost it. It used to be Great but now it’s just average. It arced in the sky, hit the stratosphere, had it’s walk in the sun and then slowly dropped, faded away into the background, into the haze, the fog, the pollution
Now twice in my life I have been in that Arc. I was Great instead of merely average. The first tine was, when I was at my secondary school and playing Rugby. Fourteen years old and our team was the best in the county for about 9 months. We were warriors. But a year later it was all gone. This time I can put my finger on it. Peer pressure, smoking and the other teams getting better coaches and getting more serious, and us – we were just pissing about - that’s what happened. The other time was a few years later and I was working on a project in Sweden. We were a dream team – Pierre my french boss, a great leader and a very clever guy. Marco and John handling the Process side and me doing all the technical work. We were great – could have done anything. Six months later it was all over Pierre got passed over for promotion so was on his way. Me I was back working with idiots.
So being great is great while it lasts and you can look back with some satisfaction – but theres a bitter tang too – if you were that good then what could you have achieved if you’d stayed great. But thats not an option everything always screws up everything does. Just ask Jimmy Rabbitte…
